Newborn Photography in Palm Desert

Newborn photography in Palm Desert should feel calm, comfortable and centered around your baby—not like another obligation during an already overwhelming season.

At Melissa Winn Photography, newborn sessions are intentionally unhurried. We make time for feeding, changing, soothing and cuddling while creating beautiful portraits of your baby and the people who love them most.

For the Mothers Who Want to Remember Everything

The first weeks with your baby can feel endless and fleeting at the same time.

You may believe you will always remember the curled fingers, sleepy expressions, soft newborn hair and the feeling of your baby resting against your chest. But babies change almost daily, and the smallest details are often the first to fade.

Your newborn photographs preserve more than what your baby looked like. They preserve the beginning of your relationship and the way it felt to hold this tiny person who changed everything.

Newborn Photography in Palm Desert Designed Around Your Baby

Every newborn has a different temperament, level of flexibility and preference for being handled. Some babies sleep through nearly every setup. Others want to remain wrapped, eat frequently or be held between photographs.

Your baby does not need to perform for the camera.

I follow your baby’s cues and adjust the session accordingly. No particular pose, setup, sleeping image or unwrapped photograph can be guaranteed. Your baby will never be forced into a position for the sake of completing a predetermined shot list.

The goal is not to make every session look identical. The goal is to create a beautiful collection while respecting the baby in front of me.

When Should You Schedule Newborn Portraits?

Most newborn sessions are photographed when babies are approximately 7 to 21 days old. During this period, many babies still naturally curl into positions reminiscent of the womb and may sleep for longer stretches.

However, 21 days is not an expiration date. Older newborns can also be photographed beautifully. We may adjust the posing, wrapping and expectations according to your baby’s age, alertness and comfort.

The best time to reserve your session is during pregnancy. We will use your due date to protect space on my calendar and confirm the actual photography date after your baby arrives.

Because I accept no more than two newborn sessions each week, early booking is strongly encouraged.

What Happens During a Newborn Session?

Your session begins slowly. There is no expectation that your baby will arrive asleep or remain asleep.

We take time to feed, settle and comfortably wrap your baby before beginning. From there, I move gently between photographs and setups according to what your baby tolerates well.

If your baby needs to stop, we stop. If your baby prefers being wrapped, we create variety through colors, props, angles and family photographs rather than repeatedly attempting an unwrapped pose.

Sessions may include:

  • Wrapped newborn portraits

  • Safely supported poses when your baby is comfortable

  • Close-up images of hands, feet, eyelashes and other tiny details

  • Photographs with parents

  • Photographs with siblings

  • Natural images of your family interacting

  • Fine-art composite portraits when appropriate

These are possibilities rather than a guaranteed shot list. Your final collection will reflect what your baby safely and comfortably allows us to create.

Studio or In-Home Newborn Sessions

Studio Sessions

My home studio provides a carefully prepared environment with newborn wraps, props, accessories, backdrops and controlled lighting already in place.

A studio session may be the right choice if you want greater access to my full collection of styling options and prefer to leave the setup and cleanup entirely to me.

In-Home Sessions

If leaving home during the postpartum period feels overwhelming, I can bring the experience to you.

Your home does not need to be spotlessly clean, perfectly decorated or flooded with natural light. We need only a manageable working area and room for the equipment required for your session.

In-home sessions can incorporate the nursery, your bedroom or meaningful areas of your home, but they do not have to be entirely lifestyle-based. We will discuss the available space and desired style before your session.

Newborn Safety Comes Before the Photograph

Babies are never left unattended. Their comfort and temperature are continuously monitored, and every position is evaluated to protect the airway—including maintaining appropriate space between the chin and chest.

I am safety certified through Ana Brandt Photography. Assistants and composite techniques are used whenever a finished image cannot be safely created in a single photograph.

No photograph is important enough to compromise your baby’s well-being.

Styling, Wraps and Props

You do not need to purchase special clothing or arrive with a complicated creative plan.

Newborn sessions include access to a curated collection of:

  • Wraps and blankets

  • Newborn outfits and knits

  • Headbands, bonnets and tiebacks

  • Baskets, bowls and other appropriate props

  • Backdrops and coordinated styling pieces

Before your session, we will discuss the colors and images you are drawn to. I will prepare a cohesive selection while remaining flexible enough to change direction based on your baby’s comfort.

You are welcome to bring a meaningful item, heirloom or personal accessory. We will evaluate whether it can be incorporated safely and naturally.

Simple, Transparent Digital Collections

Newborn collections begin at $600 and include professionally edited, high-resolution digital images delivered through a private online gallery.

Every collection, inclusion and price is published before you book. There are no required print purchases, hidden minimums or post-session sales appointments.

You will know what your chosen collection includes and what it costs before your session begins.
